Just curious, if anyone happens to know?
So long story short, my daughter was recently put on a heart and lung monitor after we had what the hospital classified a "near SIDS experience." I found her blue and non responsive in her crib, and she was able to be revived with CPR. One of her doctors said it could have been acid reflux which caused her throat to seize up and her breathing stopped. anyway, she has been on the monitor now and it’s really been great. no false alarms, and I check on her frequently but it offers a lot of peace of mind for me.
well, recently I was tossing out some of the old paperwork and brochures from the hospital when I had first brought her home. I found a Guide to Safe Sleeping that discouraged the use of these monitors. I know my daughter has a valid reason to be on one, but I wonder, with SIDS being a risk for so many infants, why are they not recommended for more frequent use? I got extremely lucky that I happened to check on her when I did, but if I hadn’t we would have lost her. Would they maybe help save a few babies from dying as a result of something that has no real explanation? What are your opinions?

Monitors are not recommended because all they do is elevate anxiety in parents unnecessarily, as they can be set to alarm easily and give the impression there is a problem.
In you case, however you can thank your lucky stars all worked out for you.
Personally speaking all these baby monitors should be banned, as they do the same thing. Create anxiety in parents.
In most cases of SIDS, they are not preventable, as they are still researching what the actual cause is?. All we know at present is the the SIDs recommendations has reduced the incidence if SIDS by 70%, which is a significant number.
is so happy your baby was one of the lucky! i think that that pamphlet was made to not scare the average mom…after losing a baby to sids i insisted the next two babies were monitored
For your daughter, yes, I think the monitor is wonderful. For me, no. I wouldnt use one. I was SO paranoid about SIDS in the beginning (and still am, just not as much) that the thought of actually having to use a monitor to make sure my baby is still breathing would make me lose my mind. Walking into her room every so often was enough for my peace of mind. Id be more paranoid with a monitor.
A lot of people have complained about a few different brands of those monitors. Giving off a lot of false alarms. Obviously someone in your situation has a great reason to have one as do a lot of moms. I’ve very happy to hear you caught her before something awful happened.
I know what you mean. When I had my twins, one of them came home on a monitor that would beep if they stopped breathing for many different reasons. It did give me piece of mind.
Im not sure why they dont offer them to everyone.. $$ probably!
Like others have said, use of such monitors would certainly send a lot of already nervous parents over the edge with worry.
But, I’m sure those who have lost babies to SIDS would have rather had the option of needless worry, over that of losing their baby.
The monitors may be discouraged, but they are certainly not prohibited, and I’m glad they are available for situations such as yours.
I am so happy to hear that your baby is okay. My heart was ready to sink when I first glimpsed the word "SIDS" in your question. Your baby truly is a little miracle. Take care, and kiss your little one for me.
