i use a naturopathic doctor who put me on dgl, a digestive enzyme found in the health food stores or natural markets like whole foods. it is essentially black licorice. chew two to four tablets twenty minutes before meals and it is great! after seven years of suffering with acid reflux, i am FINE.
Ask to have a blood test for H Pilori bacteria, the same one that causes ulcers has been found to be a possible cause of acid reflux. If so it can be treated with antibiotics.
There are a few more powerful drugs u could try, such as protonix, prevacid, and nexium all would work better than prilosec. Especially if your using over the counter prilosec. The threee i mentioned are not cheap though. There is also a sugery called nissen. You wont have reflux after that and some people cant throw up afer it either. Good luck
See if you can get a barium swallow done. I have bad acid reflux in high school. During this test, you swallow barium and lie down while Xrays are being taking of your body. Your lower esophogial sphincter may not be working. This valve shuts to prevent acid from coming up back into your esophogas. Also, get a wedge pillow so you can sleep with your head elevated. I also took prevacid.
You sound like the exact same symptoms I had….I went to my gastroenterologist, and she did a scope and also put me on Aciphex 20mg twice a day, and she stretched my esophagus, and said the feeling of food getting stuck in my throat is scar tissue from the heartburn scarring.
I learned to modify my diet drastically.
My diagnosis was Barrett’s esophagus, Acid Reflux Disease, and hyperacidity. My diet is no spicy foods, no citrusy foods, no smoking, no alcohol. Sometimes I eat something fried and it still kicks up the symptoms, but usually I am okay.
Prilosec didn’t work for me, neither did Nexium.
Hope you feel better.
It sounds like your GI Doc needs to do an upper GI series and perhaps a CT or PET scan of your abdomen.Your research is correct your symptoms can be an indicator for a multitude of conditions.
Be sure and discuss all your symptoms with your Dr. as well as the lifestyle modifications you have made and the ineffectiveness of the meds.
Be persistent. : )
Check to see if you might have a Candida infection or yeast infection in your throat. I had severe acid reflux or so I thought. Once we found out I had Candida and started treatment and modified the foods I was eating. The reflux went away. I haven’t had the same problems since.
I’m glad that you have changed your diet, lost weight, cut down on drinking, and that you don’t smoke. These are key factors that can cause acid reflux. Caffeine is probably the #1 enemy for heartburn and GERD. Maybe you just haven’t found the right medication. Have you tried Nexium? Protonix?Tagamet/cimetidine? I take Tagamet at bedtime and occasionally one during the daytime for "breakthrough" heartburn. I find that Pepto-Bismol coats my esophagus and stomach and gets rid of the burning very fast. I sleep with my head elevated and that helps also.
As one person mentioned, you might have the H. pylori bacteria which can be diagnosed with a simple blood test. I couldn’t take the antibiotic that kills it, so I did some research on alternative medicine. A substance in cranberries will kill the H. pylori bacteria! I’m not that fond of cranberries, so I bought the 500 mg. capsules–sold as Azo or you can get other brands at Walmart, pharmacies, grocery stores, or most places that sell vitamins and supplements. You can also find them online. I buy a lot of my vitamins and supplements from Puritan’s Pride. They have a TRIPLE STR CRANBERRY FRUIT CONCENTRATE (420 mg. softgel + vitamin C and E). http://www.puritansale.com/default70.asp? I took 1 capsule in the morning on an empty stomach and didn’t eat for at least 30 minutes. Then I took another one at bedtime. I did this for a month. I have had no symptoms of ulcers since then!
Has your gastroenterologist scoped your esophagus and stomach? Or have you had an upper GI where you have to drink barium? You sound like me when I research a medical issue. I always think that I might have this or that, and it may be more serious than it really is. You have gotten some excellent answers/advice from others! I hope my information has been helpful and that you can find some relief soon!
my daughter has acid reflux and prilosec works well. Caffeine is one trigger. Peppermint is a big no no. I not knowing that tic tacs were a form of peppermint would buy them for her and we would end up at the hospital those times. chocolate is also a trigger. her doctor also recommended that we put the head of her bed on blocks so she would not lay flat while sleeping. so far the medication and removal of her trigger has worked wonderfully

I suffered with GERD since I was 17 years old. It was so bad that I developed a hiatial hernia and had to have my esophagus dialated several times just so I could eat. I drank LARGE quantities of tap water (filtered and non) to just get down a half of a meal. I moved to Germany and was forced to start drinking sparkling mineral water because that is what is offered and it’s difficult to get still water. No one drinks the tap water – ever (even though it’s not a quality issue). Within a year my acid reflux was GONE. Years of downing Prilosec, Tums, and whatever else I could get my hands on. Refraining from eating any bread or meat when eating out because it wouldn’t go down. Elevating the head of my bed to lesson the symptoms. Sleeping on a mound of pillows. Waking countless times a night to down another tablet. GONE! I recently did a search online for "acid reflux and tap water" and found out that it wasn’t a coincidence, there was a reason my GERD was healed! Now I feel like a born again acid reflux sufferer and want to spread the word. No medications, no gadgets, nothing to buy – except SPRING WATER. Choose your poison, still or sparkling. DO NOT DRINK PURIFIED WATER – watch the labels!!! This is no exaggeration – it works. Follow the suggestions on the above listed website, if you’re one of the 90% whose reflux disease is caused by the gaseous chlorine, you WILL find relief. Once in a great while I end up with some indigestion because I ate a yogurt or banana (bad triggers!). And if I’m unfortunate enough to land a bottle of purified water instead of spring – it will trigger an episode as well. I have been healed for 7 years now and am happy to say am not supporting Tums and Prilosec anymore. No more esophagus dialations, no more bleeding hiatial hernia.
Too bad the chlorine didn’t have anything to do with my cellulite….
