My baby is 17 weeks old,what works for acid reflux?
We use enfamil A.R..Dr Brown’s bottles and started Zantac this week twice a day. He still spits up (throws up) from end of one bottle to the beginning of the next. ALOT. He is growing,but I don’t want him hurting. He has cried much more than my other 2 children ever did and I can see the scared look in his face when he chokes sometimes. I really need help.

I have asked my doctor,hence the Zantac that is given by prescription. Right now all he is saying is to use the medication. I was just hoping someone might have tried something I haven’t that has worked.

First of all make sure that he really is refluxing. A swallow study or OPCG (a type of sleep study done overnight in a hospital) could do quite a bit toward getting a proper diagnosis. If he is refluxing, thickening his feeds could help. The Enfamil AR has added rice starch that thickens in his tummy, the idea being that it is harder to reflux up thicker fluids. A soy or hypoallergenic formula could help. I also know of mothers who swear by Enfamil Gentlease which has partially broken down proteins. Please discuss with your pediatrician before changing formula. The pediatrician might have samples available so that you could try several feeds without having to buy a whole large container. Feeds are usually thickened with 1 tbsp rice cereal to 2 oz of formula. Make sure you are using the Dr. Brown’s Y-cut nipple so that your little one can get formula out! Keep him sitting upright (in a car seat or punkin seat) for 30 minutes to 1 hour after each feed. Lastly is your baby having plenty of wet diapers? A condition called pyloric stenosis can develop where the muscle at the end of the stomach becomes too tight and food can’t leave the stomach into the intestine. Babies with pyloric stenosis have projectile vomiting and usually dehydration from the frequent vomiting. The condition is cured with a simple surgery. I hope that you find something that will help. Both my children had it. I could not give them juice or clear fluids until they were able to pull themselves up by themselves to a standing position, the doctor said it was because the muscles in the throat area was not formed yet. I had to put cereal in their bottles to make it thicker so it would stay down easier. Try a little and build until you see a difference. Keep them propped up at night. I actually had to uprise the crib. A padded car seat was used until they were moving too much. It is a hard thing to deal with and scary, but dont worry it does end. It was really hard when they had the flu, pedialyte would come up as they were drinking, so couldn’t do that. It will go away my daughter was 8 months, my son 10. Once your baby is able to pull themselves up you’ll notice soon after poof it’s gone, Good Luck! I knew my daughter had immediately after she was born. My doctor said it was too soon to tell, that night she spit up blood. A mothers intuition, lol and I had dealt with it with my son. You have to cut the nipples of the bottles gradually to help the formula go through. I also should ask if it is what my children had, when they spit up it’s not curldled? it is still undigested, thats how the doctor knew, it is worse when they are laying down flat, I learned to change a diaper in 2 seconds.
Acohol free gripe water works great.
Secondly, your baby is young, demand to see a pediatrician. Baby’s can get hernias from birth and it could be a problem. My daughter had the same problem when she was young, it showed up when I switched her from breast milk to formula,. The docs tried meds and different formulas and it turned out to be a web growth in her bowel that was preventing proper digestion. It was simple to clear and she was fine after that.
so — see a pediatrician. don’t let your doctor play medicinal roulette with an infant.
In the meantime – perhaps a soy based formlua in case it is a dairy reaction (very common). They are readily available at the same stores as your Enfamil.
I had this very same problem. I hated giving my baby Zantac and the doctor wasn’t much help. I finally went through every formula available on the shelf at the store and found one that work. Enfamil Nutramigen. I don’t know if the spelling is right. It is the most expensive formula but it worked so well. It stinks but it is amazing.
My baby went from crying all the time and spitting up to sleeping peacefully at about five months.
The doctor says that the baby just grew out of it but I noticed a big difference after using the Nutramigen. I took my baby off of the Zantac and he was fine. At ten months I switched him to soy formula with no problems. He is now 13 months old and a wonderful baby.
Have you tried a half teaspoon of honey in 2 oz warm water? What type of formula is he on? It may be disagreeing with him, and may need to be changed. If he takes an entire bottle at one feeding, maybe try burping him when he’s halfway through. Hope this helps!
