GERD/Acid Reflux problems…?
I have had severe symptoms with acid reflux. At times I wake up with a fluid coming out my nose and sometimes I wake up with the sensation of drowining and then I’m in the bathroom trying to cough the burning sensation out of my throat.
I am on nexium 40mg daily. I take it at 3pm and eat my last meal at 4:30pm. The thing is that I go to bed around 10pm and still wake up with these symptoms that really hurt and interrupt my sleep. There are times I am chewing tums, eating a few crackers, drinking pepto or even downstairs drinking straight out the milk jug just to get some relieve and nothing helps. I stay away from spicy foods/carbonated bevereages and like I said I eat my last meal at 4:30, sometimes 5 but go to bed 5–6 hours later and still have this problem.
I have taken many prescribed meds, and the little purple pill (nexium) doesnt even help anymore. Do you think that surgery for this might be my only option? If so, what are the pros/cons to it.
Thanks, and sorry this was so long. I just cant take it anymore.
BTW….. I am 37 years old

I had GERD for 12 years… seemed like I tried EVERYthing… until my GI doc put me on a brand new (FDA-approved in Jan ‘09) med called KAPIDEX. I figured it would work just as well (or NOT well) as the rest… but she was right… it’s like a miracle drug! I haven’t had heartburn in months! it’s also good for treating erosive esophagitis.
as for surgery… it depends upon your age. I’m only 27 and my doc said they won’t do it until you are older. she also said that while the surgery is initially very effective, that there is a high likelihood of it reversing itself (i.e. "slipping"). my friend is 41 and he just had the surgery a few months ago, but it was more for his voice than for the actual reflux. he definitely has less heartburn, but it’s not all gone… so it’s definitely not a miracle cure.
